Amidst the current global climate, Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital's grand opening will look slightly different than anticipated. On February 7th, the hospital will serve to provide relief in the fight against COVID-19. Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital will act as a system solution to capacity challenges to the healthcare system faced across Ontario and beyond.
At this time, the hospital's focus is solely on providing much-needed space to care for critical and acute care patients. It is unknown when Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital will officially open its doors, as the surge in COVID-19 cases continues to reach new heights. Premier Doug Ford (2021) exclaimed that "The Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital is the first newly built hospital in three decades, and this net new capacity will be critical until we are in a position to widely administer vaccines across the province" (par. 3).
Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital is the first hospital built in the City of Vaughan and the first net-new hospital built in Ontario in more than 30 years. As one of Mackenzie Health's two hospitals, Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital will be the first smart hospital in Canada, featuring fully integrated smart technology systems and medical devices that can speak directly to one another. This technology will maximize information exchange and enable improved patient care. Its fully integrated Get Well system offers a one-of-a-kind healthcare experience for both staff and patients.
