Everything You Need to Know About Canada’s EV Charging Incentive Program, ZEVIP

The Government of Canada recently released the Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP) as an incentive for Canadian organizations to purchase and install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.

The program will assist federal and provincial governments across Canada in meeting the 2016 Pan-Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change program that aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions for the whole country by 30%.

Since nearly one quarter of greenhouse gas emissions are caused by transportation, such as from vehicles and light duty trucks, ZEVIP aims to address the lack of electric vehicle charging stations across Canada, and increase EV sales throughout the nation.

What are the hopes for future EV sales in Canada?

  • 10% of total car sales will be electric by 2025

  • 30% of total car sales will be electric by 2030

  • 100% of total car sales will be electric by 2040

How much funding is available?

Applicants have the opportunity to save up to 75% on the total cost for EV charging stations. Funds administered through ZEVIP will be limited to a maximum of $5 million per project and will follow the maximum funding guidelines per type of charging station below:

ZEVIP Funding guidelines chart

Which EV charging stations are eligible for funding?

  • Connected EV charging stations, which can communicate to other stations and/or to a server or the cloud via cellular/wireless signal or connected vehicle communications using software to report on usage and/or other capabilities, such as providing real-time status of charging stations.

  • Newly purchased EV chargers (not leased)

  • Those certified for use in Canada and commercially available

  • EV charging stations featuring one or more of the following charging connector types: SAE J1772 standard plug head, SAE J1772 Combo, CHAdeMO, other proprietary connector types

  • Each connector must be able to charge a vehicle and support a dedicated parking space

Should you apply for ZEVIP?

You should consider applying for ZEVIP if you meet the following criteria:

  • Your objective is to install chargers where Canadians live, work and/or play

  • Have an infrastructure project for mass or last mile delivery

  • Are able to demonstrate 50% of secured funding for your share of the total project cost

  • Own land, have access to land, or have the capacity to obtain access to the sites where the project will be installed

  • Have the infrastructure to install a minimum of 10 dual port EV charging stations

What if you don’t meet the criteria above?

If you don’t meet basic applicant requirements above, you should wait until 2020 or 2021 to apply for the Electric Vehicle and Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Deployment Initiative (EVAFIDI).

The objective of EVAFIDI is to establish coast-to-coast fast chargers (also known as Level 3 chargers) across national highways and gas stations, major metropolitan areas. This initiative is funded through the EVAFIDI 2016-2022 $94.5 million budget.
